Back

SouthWynn Bands long standing engagement at El Puente Restaurant in Nixa, MO came to an end on Saturday, Feb. 2, 2008. As Mr. Wynn explained to customers and fans it was a situation beyond his control.

The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) along with Broadcast Music, Inc. (BMI) are two organizations that collect royalties for songwriters. In this author's opinion the way in which these organizations do business is at times heavy handed, they still have their own interests in mind. The problem is we are losing the opportunity to hear local bands in small venues around the country. Why? Because both these organizations feel that unless they receive money for each song they represent, those songs cannot be played in public. The result is venues that host bands like SouthWynn have to play thousands of dollars yearly just to ASCAP & BMI. Such is the case with El Puente in Nixa, MO.

What is the answer? I am not sure, but we need to realize that unless some changes are made that allow these small venues to host local bands we will not be seeing groups like SouthWynn on a regular basis. Mr. Wynn and family are sorry this had to happen but as stated previously it is beyond their control.
